August 29, 1999

With The Sarah Connor Chronicle's pilot set in 1999 and two years after the events of Terminator 2, it forces T2 to have taken place in 1997 instead of 1995. And the date of judgment day in T2 has to get bumped two years as well, from August 29, 1997 to August 29, 1999.

The pilot opens with Sarah having a nightmare on the morning of August 24, 1999, but wouldn't that have been way cooler if it had been five days later — on August 29? Even if she believed they'd stopped judgment day, there was no way of knowing for sure until that day came and went without the world blowing up. So what a perfect morning it would have been for Sarah to have a nightmare about John's death and the end of the world. But instead, she has that dream 5 days beforehand. Oh what a missed opportunity.

With the way this show had trouble with dates, I wonder if the story was actually supposed to kick off on the former judgment day and they just screwed it up?

Wait. Where is a TSCC timeline?

T2 takes place in (late) 1994. Judgment Day, according to T2, is in 1997. I thought the show took place in 1999 (pilot), two years after the supposed J Day Uncle Bob gave and the Connors are simply living with the ghost of it supposedly never happening due to their efforts in T2...

It's been awhile since Ive watched the first season and I could have sworn the show was true to T1/T2 timeline

Well that would certainly make John's "it's been almost two years" line from the pilot make a lot more sense since August 24, 1999 would be almost two years since August 29, 1997. But I've been under the impression since the beginning that the series picks up two years after T2, not two years after the known judgement day from T2. I'm sure I read that in interviews with Josh Friedman before. Your take on it certainly works a lot better, though. Actually, John's line wouldn't make sense in that context because he follows it with "no one knows us." And that implies two years of hiding from the Feds (something they would've had to do since T2).

But they're certainly not true to the T1 timeline. John turning 16 in Nov 2007 means he would've turned 16 in Nov 1999. That makes him born in Nov 1983 and conceived in Feb 1983. If Sarah was 33 in 1999, then she was only 17 when she met in 1983. If we're generous and say she was 33 going on 34 in 1999, then she could be 17 going on 18 in 1983 and could be a senior in high school. But in T1, she was already in college. So the TSCC dates do mess things up a bit, at least for T1.

But they're certainly not true to the T1 timeline.

Yeah, T1/T2-John was conceived in May '84 and born Feb 1985; Sarah was 19 in T1. So, their ages in T2 would be John: 9 going on 10, Sarah: 29. Sarah would have been 32 for '97 J Day and 34 for the beginning of TSCC.

Pretty much anything Terminator since T2 was a disaster for those that were interested in timelines, ages, and dates matching up. T1 and T2 make sense (some would argue, tho) with dates and ages. I think messing up ages is the easiest since these are never explicit in the first two films and you only catch the ages by reading the scripts and notice shots of dates on computers in T2.

Nevertheless, I guess I subscribe to TSCC being more timeline-conscious with T2 and John is referring to J Day in '97 when he says "it's been almost two years."

Perhaps they were in hiding after '94, but still active as 'terrorist' to some degree due to Sarah's probable paranoia. I guess after August '97, she might have given it a try at an average existence --which didn't last long, of course.

See, the way I'd re-written it in my head to compensate for the time line, T2's J-day was still in '97 and Sarah's (cut) dream of Kyle was actually prompted by the proximity to the date rather then some prophetic bull and they were acclimating into a normal life for those two years running from the police but actually thinking they'd stopped it. I could have sworn that something in the show at least in some way implied to me that j-day was still in 1997.

Sarah's cut dream of Kyle in T2 couldn't have been prompted by the proximity to judgement day because she didn't even know when judgement day was until after she broke out of Pescadero and got that info from the T-800. But I don't count that dream as canon anyway since it wasn't in the theatrical release.

I don't recall anything in TSCC pointing to the 1997 judgement day date.

... she didn't even know when judgement day was until after she broke out of Pescadero and got that info from the T-800...

Wait, didn't Kyle tell her when it was in T1? She was screaming about it in Pescadero at Silberman.
Oct. 4th, 2009 09:37 pm (UTC)
Oh yeah, I'd totally forgotten about her screaming the date at Silberman. So Kyle must've told her the date. I do wonder how that date ended up staying the same after Cyberdyne got a head start on the technology as a result of T1. God, a person could go crazy thinking about this. :P

See, I took that to mean that the chip ending up with Cyberdyne was part of the same paradox that created John Connor in the first place: that it was something that also happened in the earlier time lines before and that Sarah and John even finding out about it was the new timeline, and throwing a wrench in everything by going explosives happy.

I'm not fond of paradoxes, though, so I like to look for multiple timeline explanations.

Forgive me for jumping in,

Wait, didn't Kyle tell her when it was in T1? She was screaming about it in Pescadero at Silberman.

The J Day date is never mentioned in T1, but it is assumed that Kyle provided this information (off screen) during the time he protected Sarah since Sarah says something like, "I know the date: August 29th, 1997 ... I know it happens." in T2 before meeting the T-800 that, basically, explains to the audience what Sarah already knew about J Day and the details she wanted to know more of to stop it.

LOL, now I have to watch T1 again. I was making that same assumption cause the line about, what was it, 1 Million Sunblock? Made me giggle a sick, sadistic giggle.
Oct. 4th, 2009 09:53 pm (UTC)
Anyone not wearing two million sunblock's gonna have a real bad day!
Oct. 4th, 2009 09:55 pm (UTC)
lol I love that line cause it seems so 90's?

I was always under the impression that the events of T2 and J-day happened in 1997. Sarah broke out of Pescadero on June 8th. It never once entered my mind that they pushed the date of J-Day forward two years. It wouldn't have made sense. Because Sarah and John were pretty chill with the end of the world possibly around the corner.

To me, they were more relaxed because J-day came and went and the world was still there and it's been two years since.

So to me, when Sarah broke out of Pescadero and those events... they had roughly 2 and a half months until the world was going to blow up.

If we set T2 in June 1997 (as TSCC does) and leave j-day on August 29, 1997, it doesn't leave enough time for everything to happen. Cyberdyne has to finish it's development of the processor and sell it to the military. The military then has to test it and congress has to pass the Skynet funding bill before it gets implemented. So the only way the show's retconning of T2 to 1997 works is if we bump j-day too.

In a few months [Miles Dyson] creates a revolutionary type of mircoprocessor.

In three years Cyberdyne will become the largest supplier of military computer systems. All stealth bombers are upgraded with Cyberdyne computers, becoming fully unmanned, Afterward, the fly with a perfect operational record.

The Skynet funding bill is passed. The system goes on-line August 4th, 1997. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn, at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. eastern time, August 29. In a panic, they try to pull the plug.

OK so maybe SCC fudged with it a bit. Instead of 3 years it's two months? HAHA Orrrrr maybe it was just a year? Either way, I don't think J-Day was supposed to be 8/29/99.. John and Sarah just didn't act like it.
Oct. 4th, 2009 10:57 pm (UTC)
Heh. Yeah, they fudged way more than I thought. I think I was better off in my erroneous thought that the show was set two years after T2, not two years after j-day! But I was screwed up with my notes anyway since I'd forgotten about Arnold saying "in three years". That would actually set j-day in 2000 if we followed my plan of bumping j-day along with T2, so it doesn't work anyway :P

I know I try to integrate every Terminator's dates with this show in my mind and it was really hard. I keep thinking up scenarios to integrate them. Its not like this show was a reboot. John & Sarah did meet Arnie and go through all that crap. I think the show was more adherent to T1 than anything else.
