smokin' technology

How freaking cool is this? Electronic cigarettes with no smoke and no tobacco. That video shows an older model, but now they make ones that are smaller and actually look like cigarettes. They use a battery and an atomizer to heat up a nicotine cartridge and you inhale the vapor. Awesome. Well, you'd have to be a smoker to appreciate it, but I think it's way cool. I had no idea these things existed.

I think their claims of being able to use them anywhere are a tad unrealistic. I can only imagine what would happen if you puffed on this thing in a shopping mall or something. It doesn't matter that there's no tobacco and no smoke. There would be pitchforks and torches over the sight of the water vapor being exhaled. But what I'm *hoping* is it'll work as a true substitute for cigarettes. I'm not so worried about being addicted to nicotine. Actually, I'm not worried about that at all. It's the smoke that's bad, not the nicotine itself.

And since I am always impulsive with the credit card late at night, I went for it. I was going to get the white one because it looks more like a real cigarette, but then I thought puffing on something silver could be kind of cool. So here's what I ordered:

There are apparently several companies making them. NJOY wasn't the cheapest, but seemed to be the most well-established. And from what I read, this product skirts the edge of legality. So I figured when inhaling something that isn't FDA approved, reputable is better than saving a few bucks.

I should be getting it in sometime next week and I'm looking forward to trying it out. I'll keep you posted in case any other smokers out there want to give it a go.

The one benefit to my dad being a two pack a day chain smoker is that the habit became odorous enough for me and my family, none of the rest of us will touch a cigarette. We're still trying to get him to quit since, well, we worry. He's cut back at least.

Hopefully this gadget will help and is healthier than a real cigarette in the long run.

Unforuntately, that didn't work for me or my brothers. Both of my parents smoked (a lot) and we hated it. But me and my brothers eventually started smoking (my sister is the only one who didn't).

So we'll see how this thing works. I figure it's worth a try. I've never tried the patches but the nicotine lozenges help sometimes. The problem with those is as soon as I finish one, I want a cigarette!

I am glad your trying to make things better. Let us know how it works. I almost want one hearing about it and I havent even handled a cigarette before. LOL

Ha. Well they do have the zero nicotine cartridges for just that reason - so a nonsmoker who wants to puff on flavored vapor can. ;)

I JUST SAW THIS SHIT IN THE MALL YESTERDAY. It was called Electronic Cigarette, and it was totally bizarre.

I did. It's not quite the holy grail of nicotine delivery I'd hoped it would be, but it is pretty cool. It's fatter than a cigarette (maybe more like a Camel Wide) and heavier, so you can't really hold it the same way. So far, I've really just kind of played around with it and used it in place of a few cigarettes here and there.

I'm still trying to get a groove with it — figuring out how often and how deeply you need to puff on it to get enough nicotine. When you suck in enough vapor, you can feel it sort of hit your throat, but you really don't feel it hit your lungs like a cigarette. So I have this problem with believing it's actually giving me what I need. Hard to explain that, it's more of a psychological thing. If you smoke, maybe you know what I mean. I had that same problem with nictotine lozenges. Hmm... I don't feel like a need a cigarette, but it's been a while, so I must need one. Stupid addiction.

The starter set comes with 5 cartridges of varying strengths and even though I smoke ultra light cigarettes, I started with the "medium" strength (supposed to by like a light cigarette). It seems to be a good choice. I just finished up the first cartridge. NJOY says each cartridge is about a 1/2 pack of cigarettes, but on message boards, people say it's more. My brother did some math and determined it's about as much nictotine as 1 pack. So who knows. And speaking of my brother, he was eager to try it out and liked it so much he just ordered one for himself.

Oh, the flavor is a little weird. You can buy flavored cartidges (I have vanilla to try next), but the regular "tobacco" flavor is kind of sweet and funky. The flavor seems to get weaker as you use the cartridge, though, so I didn't mind it at all once it diminished some.

I totally know that feeling. This place is a placid puddle compared to that tempest.

    Hi Jayne!

Yeah, I'd wait for Netlfix or something. I'll see it again on the small screen just to see if I still feel the same about it.

More TSCC bits I'm thinking of:

    Hi Roxy!

Thanks for the review - great stuff, as usual.

I haven't been able to bring myself to see TG yet, and probably will wait until it's On Demand (because OD has that necessary FF feature),…

    Hi TN :)

It's not like I keep up much either. I hadn't even posted in here in year (wow, time flies!). I do miss hanging out on LJ, but once most of the community I knew had dispersed, it just…
