a shattered dream

Every time I tried to write about No Fate Con's cancellation, I failed miserably. My words were too personal, too emotional and I'd say things I shouldn't say. But not posting about it has kept me from posting anything else — I've felt like I couldn't move on without closing out that chapter. So I'm finally closing it:

"When there are things to celebrate, they should be celebrated."

The Sarah Connor Chronicles should be celebrated. It should have a convention. We tried really hard and we couldn't make it work. It was just too freaking expensive. We cancelled and everyone was refunded.

End of chapter.

The worst thing about planning a convention is that it sucks all the fun out of fandom. Now that it's behind me, I'm rekindling my TSCC love with a rewatch (my first in a very long time). I started at the beginning a few days ago and... Oh how I love season 1. It feels like home to me :)

In other news, some of us want to do a TSCC fan meetup. With fans scattered so far and wide, logistics are difficult, but there's a push for getting together in Los Angeles (so we could visit some of the locations where the show was filmed). If anything gets solidified, I'll post details. Also, several TSCC fans (myself included) are going to be at Dragon*Con this year, so if any others are going and want to meet up, let me know.

And yeah, I do like other shows too. The Walking Dead is great. Once Upon a Time is nice. I like Lost Girl. I'm still hanging in there with Fringe... In time, I'm sure I'll get to posting about them. But The Sarah Connor Chronicles? That's my one true fandom love. And it's the only show I've ever wanted to celebrate.

*hugs you tight*

I was very sad to learn of the cancellation. But definitely post details about the fan meetup, if it happens. Since my sister lives in San Diego and my friend lizardbeth_j (who loves TSCC) lives in the LA area, I'd definitely be up for the trek if I can swing the airfare.

Also, if you wanted to meetup St. Patrick's Day weekend, Don and I will be in Timonium for the big gun show at the fairgrounds again this year...

Oh yes, I'd love to see you again and I'd like to go back to that Timonium gun show again too. It was really cool, but we've only been that one time.

Thanks for the hug :)

I'll let you know about LA if/when that gets worked out. If we can't do a convention, a fan meetup is certainly the next best thing.

I'm glad you started your rewatch. I haven't yet.. I'm not quite there yet. Still at the "disliking of the fandom" part. I'm thinking late spring I'll start it and rediscover my love for that show. Maybe even be all sadly poetic and start the rewatch the weekend of what would have been the con.

I'm up to The Mousetrap on my rematch. I tell ya, it's weird going straight from season 1 into season 2. The tonal shift and change in the overall look of the show is so much more noticeable. I almost stopped during S&D because of it, but I kept going and I'm going to keep going straight through. This will actually be my first time ever rewatching the whole thing in order since the original airing! I'm sure I'll have some TSCC thoughts to post as I go along.

Yeah, disliking the fandom... I actually do like most of the TSCC fans, but I think like I was watching a different show that most of them ;)

That sadly poetic idea of rewatching on the former No Fate Con weekend isn't a bad idea. Maybe I'll watch it again then too.

When I do my rewatch though, I really do want to do a podcast of it with several people old and new to the show.. sadly there just doesn't seem to be interest in that sort of thing with this fandom. But, maybe that's more of a reason why I need to watch it all on my own. Without fandomness.

Did you ever do a podcast discussion about Derek? While going through season 1, I was reminded just how much he fucked things up and I thought that was a topic you'd wanted to do before. Could be a good one to do if you didn't yet.

If you decide to do some discussion podcasts again, you know I'm always game if you need a TSCC veteran. There seems to be plenty of fresh meat out there, you probably just need to figure out where they lurk so you can lure them in. I'm sure some of them would love to talk about the show.

I guess that's the hardest part. I know people are watching the show, but finding them can be difficult. I don't frequent the wikis anymore (craziness, I know!) and there's not really a place where fans hang out anymore. If you ever run across a fresh viewer, send 'em my way! And of course, if I ever do them, I'll definitely be asking you to participate :)

Like I said on twitter, I'm really sorry it didn't work out Rox ...

That being said ... I feel I would be admiss not to point this out.

But having the beat of many of the fans who I've talked too, going to LA was the main reason people were not going to come, and two, because being in LA was very Expansive to begin with.

Like I've said on the chat at the Viewing parties. Somewhere in the middle of the country or somewhere cheap in general. (New Mexico, Lawerence Kansas), that's relivent to the show is where you need to start out.

Look, you're going to do what you do, and that's fine ... and I don't wish you or anyone ill ...

But going to L.A. in my opinion and others is a mistake this first get together. Let the trip to L.A. build up, as the attendence of the get togethers.

That's my advice, because whether you believed it or not it hurt to see everyone who worked so hard not only to keep the fandom relevent, but keep it together have everything crumble.

and I really don't want to see anyone in the fandom fail again. So just play it safe for now.

PS. I've been quietly working on an idea for the Meet up, and researching some get togethers that Supernatural fans do.

If your interested you know how to get in contact with me ... if not.

Please at least think on what I've said ...

or not.

The price to fly out any potential guests to go to the middle of the country would be far more expensive than anything saved by costs of venues.

When the fans put their two cents in, I think that's the main thing they either forget to take into account or don't realize how expensive it adds up to do that.

Except the whole point of a "Fan Gathering" is for fans to attend the meet up and talk about the show and interact with eachother.

Guests come later ...

One step at a time.
Feb. 15th, 2012 07:20 am (UTC)
You do realize that if it was just a fan gathering without any guests there wouldn't be enough attendance to cover just the venue alone, right? If you don't, well... I can't help you there. But either way, you go two years of research and then get back to me and tell me how it is and how it should be.

Why are you still talking cons?

a meet up isn't a con ...

It's in the title.

You get people together in one place and you interact, that is it.

You've done research for two years?

I've done research for a month and learned from talking with four planners (One star trek, two a song of Ice and fire, and one supernatural) that it will never work when you go for the big things first. *Cough*guests*cough*

You always start small, and somewhere accessible, you let the word of mouth of the gathering grow, then you organize into something with guests and pannels.

That's how it starts, that's what it takes.

There are new TSCC fans every day ... why are you so hell bent on going bankrupt when you don't even have a consistant base of attendence?

things like these take time.

A meet up.

Hotel/Conference room (Fan Panels ... or even just a screening of an episode, with a discussion after word.)

that's all it has to start with.

I'm sorry, I forgot I was talking to the Man That Knows All. My bad. You're right. Absolutely right.

I so silly and stoopid.

Later man.

My god ...

Can you be just a little more immature?

I swear I've never met you before in my life and I feel like we've been married thirty years.

Is there any point where we can have one civil conversation without you getting frustrated at nothing and storming away?

I don't know everything ... in fact I don't know alot of things about putting on a Fandom get together.

But I have common sense enough to know that going to LA and hiring guests will result in the same problems as last time.

If you want this to stick you have to be practicle about the people who are coming to this. That money saved up to go to LA for the Con is gone now.

So you cut LA out because it now has to be accessible to everyone which means cheap!

That's all I'm saying.

That's all I've been saying for months.

And I'm sure it's fallen on deaf ears.
Feb. 15th, 2012 07:58 am (UTC)
What are you talking about? Are you talking about Roxy and the few others that are planning to meet up? From my understanding it's a group of people that are deciding amongst themselves to meet somewhere at some time and if other people want to join them, great. If not, oh well. It's not some big thing. Just a meet up. If they want to go and do it, what's the problem? If they want to fly out to LA, what's it to you?

If you want a fan meetup somewhere else, plan one.

*I* personally in my earlier comments was talking about the con. If you're talking about the potential fan meet-up then obviously we weren't on the same wavelength.
Feb. 15th, 2012 08:13 am (UTC)
It's funny because I was informed in other places that if anyone had a good Idea for a meet up that we were too come up with one.

But if you're dead set on going to LA ... than by all means go, no ones stoping you. It sounds fun, take pictures.

As for starting a fan meet up.

It sounds interesting ... I can see how to begin one. There's a idea or two floating around different channels about it.

Though to be honest I was hoping that I was just spit balling ideas for everyone at SavetheSCC.

Oh well ... I'm getting off topic.

As for the wavelength ...

It's an informed opinion after four years that we've never been on the same wavelength ... ever.

Which is why we fight all the time.

I'm sure this arguement is going to be deleted or Roxy will confirm which way it goes to at least one of us hopefully.

If not ...

You're always a pleasure, ma'am

I think Schmacky covered most of what I'd say, but I'll jump in anyway.

Savethescc isn't planning any meetups (savethescc ceased activity over a year and a half ago) and meetups aren't part of a reboot plan to build up to a convention. TSCC fandom is small and not very cohesive, so we approached No Fate Con as a one-time event, not something that could start small and grow year after year into the kind of event we wanted to do. And after having invested a year and a half on it before we ultimately had to cancel, I think it's very unlikely we'd ever try to do it again.

The convention had to be planned for LA, but fan meetups can happen anywhere. Plenty of places have been talked about, but the only locations that seem to have any traction so far are Atlanta (because of Dragon*Con) and Los Angeles (because it's where the show was filmed).

Atlanta has no plans, really. Several TSCC fans that I know are going, so we'll meet up and hang out like persia and aztalantaturf and I did last year. If a bunch of people end up going, maybe we'll see about reserving some meetup space in a hotel lounge, but I don't think it's going to be more than like 8-10 of us hanging out at various times.

Los Angeles is just being talked about, not planned yet. That would probably be a little more structured (deciding what hotel we'll stay at and what we'll do) since it's not part of an existing event. But the lure of LA (aside from it being Terminator Mecca) is that we could do a group tour of WB and/or go see some of the other filming locations. It's just fans talking right now, so I don't know if it'll happen. If it does, though, it doesn't preclude meetups from happening in other locations too.

As I said on teh facebook, I'm going to try very hard to be at Dragon*Con this year. I'd love to see everyone who adores the show!
Feb. 15th, 2012 11:55 pm (UTC)
I'll look forward to getting to meet you in person if you can go!

Nice Roxy...cleaning Riley's blood off the tile. <chuckles>
With the price of gas to drive between New England and DC approaching the price of a plane ticket to LA, there's not a huge incentive to go short. Whoever made the point of flight to the MidWest being expensive, was correct. LA flight are probably cheaper. Still, I remember hotels in that area being *STUPID* expensive.
Anyone know current rates?

WB lot might be fun, $50/person + $7 parking.

    Hi Jayne!

Yeah, I'd wait for Netlfix or something. I'll see it again on the small screen just to see if I still feel the same about it.

More TSCC bits I'm thinking of:

    Hi Roxy!

Thanks for the review - great stuff, as usual.

I haven't been able to bring myself to see TG yet, and probably will wait until it's On Demand (because OD has that necessary FF feature),…

It's not like I keep up much either. I hadn't even posted in here in year (wow, time flies!). I do miss hanging out on LJ, but once most of the community I knew had dispersed, it just…
