Lena speaks!

Has it been two weeks yet since I declared a moratorium on subject lines with exclamation points? If it hasn't been, that's just too bad because this required it. The IMAY site posted their Q&A with Lena Headey. If you call yourself a Lena fan, you'll want to read the whole thing, but here are the TSCC-related questions she answered.

Going from Terminator to GoT , both with huge fan followings, is it hard to live up to the fan expectations?
I am constantly encouraged when people enjoy what i do, it makes me very happy that some people "get" what i do .. there is no great mastermind behind it.. so i don't think people have expectations, i think they either dig you or not.. so to those who dig.. THANKYOU

What would you have liked to explore with the role of Sarah Connor that you didn’t get a chance to?
There were so many things i wanted to do with the character and sadly it never happened.. i think she could've been darker and a little more fucked up .. and i wanted to expose more of her isolation.

How much do you miss playing the role of Sarah Connor?
I miss working with Thomas .. we are great friends and it was such a mutual support and encouragement ... he is a wonderfully generous beautiful young actor, i am so excited to see what happens for him.... he is seemingly taking over hollywood , getting the recognition he should.

At the end of the SCC S2 finale, what do you think happens to Sarah Connor? Is she always fated to get cancer? Do you think she ever sees John again?
She should see John again .. they are a great team..they still have alot to teach each other.

This next question is the one I submitted :)

There has been a lot of talk recently about the possibility of a Sarah Connor Chronicles movie. Thomas Dekker, Summer Glau and Brian Austin Green have all said they'd love to come back together for it. You're the only one who hasn't been heard from and you're the whole reason I loved the show! Please tell me you'd be Sarah again if there was a movie.
I would consider it yes.

Yay!

Lena will always be my fave SC...
Wow - thanks, Rox!

Wonderful news. I have the feeling that "I would consider it" means "if the money is right". :-)

She also gives the impression that there were things which she didn't like about working on the show, although the cancellation alone would be enough to leave a bad taste in anyone's mouth.

Also love the idea of an even darker and more fucked-up SC.

Please, oh please, oh please...

Yes, I think so too — money and scheduling. I've always been under the impression that she loved playing the character but hated the exhaustive hours of doing a network series. So a movie would be the perfect thing, really.

Me too and I'd totally expect to see it in John's absence.

I want a TSCC movie SO BAD.

Concider it? :\\

Why does this not make me as happy as it should?

But YAY you getting a question answered!

I think that's about the best answer we could've hoped for. We'll never get an "OMG YES! I'd jump at the chance to play Sarah again" kind of response. But what we got was an answer that puts an end to the rumors that she wouldn't be interested. It's good enough for me :)

Yay! I like everything about this.

Sarah has always had a dark side, and was getting some of her inhibitions resolved during season 2. Lena seems to enjoy dark roles: Aberdeen, The Cave, The Broken. I could see her taking the character very dark, if she's allowed.

Can we lobby to get Caroline into the writer's room?

PG-13? Fuggettaboutit ;-)

Her answer gave me exactly what I was hoping for: hope! I was dreading a flat out "sorry, no, I've moved on."

I could see her taking the character very dark, if she's allowed.

I wonder if she was disappointed that they never went anywhere with Sarah's "bad bitch" switch in SMW. They seemed to be taking the character down that darker path for about 20 seconds of the follow-up episode and then forgot all about it after that.

I also wonder if one of the things she didn't like about working on the show was the wrecking of the Sarah-John relationship in S2. She loved working with Thomas and the writers either split them or had them at logger-heads for pretty much the entire season. TV isn't really a collaborative creative process in the way a lot of movies have the luxury of time to be. Not having a say in the direction of the characters was probably pretty damn frustrating.

Can we lobby to get Caroline into the writer's room?

LOL. I was so proud to be the only fan to make Lena say "fuck." ;-)

"They seemed to be taking the character down that darker path for about 20 seconds of the follow-up episode..."

Was that where Sarah was pacing the floor deciding whether or not to shoot Riley herself? That looked pretty dark to me. Actually, it reminded me of a scene in the international cut of "Leon, The Professional", except that while Leon was restrained by his conscience and scruples, Sarah seemed more inhibited by how it would affect her relationship with John. Very dark. As much as I would enjoy seeing her wade through an army of Kaliba Greys, it's probably better for the overall story, if she avoids becoming any more like the machines. I like it best when the only people she kills, are the explicitly bad ones. Like the villains in Caroline's fic. Like when she defibrillates the grey's brain :-) in "To the Lighthouse".

"I was so proud to be the only fan to make Lena say "fuck." ;-) "
(tack bows in supplication ;-))
Summer next?

Wrecking the Sarah-John relationship:
I think that S2 got it right, about the human dynamics of mother-son partnerships. John needs to assert control, leadership. He can't do that with Sarah micro managing him, but I didn't like that Sarah was dumbed down in BTR.

Lena and Thomas have worked together on other projects that I haven't seen. I think I would enjoy seeing them together in a different 'verse. Have you seen their other (dark) film?

Yes, that. But the problem is that's all we got in follow-up to her killing someone. It wasn't enough.

I agree, but we I think needed to see her struggle more with that or the series-long build-up to her killing someone becomes weaker in hindsight.

The s2 mother-son relationship started out as a good parent-teen conflict, but I don't think it played out well in the end. What seemed to be a season-long arc of John rebelling and coming out the other side a little more mature, ended very much where we started: John loving Cameron and Sarah standing by, shrugging.

She didn't exactly micro-manage him, either. I think she gave him a lot of space to do his own thing and work through his issues. Probably too much space.

I think everyone was dumbed-down towards the end of BTR. From the moment they all got to Weaver's office, that episode fails for me in every possible way. I think John Henry was the only one who wasn't dumb in the end.

Oh, you know what? "I'd consider it" was not the best answer we could've hoped for. The best answer would've been "FUCK YEAH!"

I certainly was and I blame TITD. That's where they dropped the impact of Sarah killing Winston and dropped the 3-dots. Both of those things needed a better follow-up and that fact that they didn't get it is what I think made the Sarah arc feel pointless to a lot of people.

Aside from one measly scene in Ourselves Alone, there's no fallout to Sarah taking a human life to protect John. I certainly didn't want a replay of John's PTSD in Sarah, but we needed something. She wouldn't kill Andy. She didn't kill the kid at the bowling alley. She told Cromartie she's not a murderer. John told her she's not a murderer. Then she fucking murders someone and all we get is like 5 seconds of screen time devoted to the aftermath when she momentarily considers putting an end to the Riley situation.

Darker and more fucked-up is exactly what we should've seen in Sarah. I have no doubt that's where she would've gone in season 3 since she would've had the loss of John piled on top of her fragile psyche. But we needed to get a bigger taste of it after SMW.

"Then she fucking murders someone... "
Shooting Ed Winston was not murder, but self defense. That script was set up to leave Sarah absolutely *no* choice but to kill Winston, in defense of her own life (and John's life). It was an object lesson in the difference between premeditated murder, and a desperate act of self defense.

Had Sarah actually killed Riley, it *would* have been murder. She chose NOT to murder Riley, which was the right, moral, choice, but I'm assuming that she DID kill the guy whose brain she defibrillated.

I only looked at the episodes after SMW. The only other person she might have killed would have been Jesse, but John and Derek handled Jesse.

Jesse is still out there. Sarah has another shot...

Oh I don't see Sarah shooting Winston as self-defense. He was on the ground with a gun pointed at him. That's not self-defense. She couldn't exactly call the police, so her choices were rather limited. But she still took a life and it was premeditated for at least a few seconds before she pulled the trigger.

That was the point of "you're real, you're real." She was making a clear choice to kill a bad guy — a direct contrast to when she'd shot Winston the first time (which was a desperate act of self-defense).

I see your point, sort of.

The first time she shot him, it could be argued that it was reasonable to leave him alive, even if she didn't actually check him, she needed to escape. The second time, after everything he put her through, including letting her think he was letting her go, there was no doubt in my mind that he would have killed her when he was done with her, or to prevent her from escaping. She couldn't turn her back on him, or call for help. Even if she had been able to call the cops, she couldn't afford to be taken into custody.

I suppose she could have shot out both of his knees and then escaped, rather than killing him, but we all know he would have hunted her (and John), with intent to kill, if she left him alive.

Let's hope we're never faced with that dilemma ITRW.

LOL. Now that certainly would have been a lot to ask for! But I do love how much she swears, it makes me feel better about my own filthy mouth.

Both of those things needed a better follow-up and that fact that they didn't get it is what I think made the Sarah arc feel pointless to a lot of people.

I can't begin to guess what they were thinking in terms of letting that character beat go. I mean, they made such a huge point of it; the killing, the bad bitch voice over, all the comparisons to Cameron in SMW and then what do we get? A bit of smeared eye liner and a 30 second moment of doubt in Ourselves Alone. Like Tack, I was quite uneasy that they were going to regress her and turn her back into the machine Sarah of T2 but, if that was where they were taking her, then they really needed to let it play out as opposed to cop out.

Darker and more fucked-up is exactly what we should've seen in Sarah. I have no doubt that's where she would've gone in season 3 since she would've had the loss of John piled on top of her fragile psyche.

I don't think they knew what they were doing with her in those last few episodes. She's trying to reach out to Charley and letting her mask slip with him, she's pushing Derek and Cam away and running with John. Then she's sick, or not sick. Defiant in the jail and then verbally cowed by Weaver. And finally she steps out of the bubble and lets her son go on without her, but she's not defeated there, she's promising to fight on but she still might be sick. She was all over the place really. But then, they kinda all were *sigh*.

I was just thinking about that recently! My thoughts on where things would go and how Sarah's arc would/should play out has developed a bit more so I think I'm going to actually just do whole post about it soon.

It's been percolating for a while and it involves faith and purpose and stuff like that. I've been so busy with savethescc Comic Con prep that I just haven't had time to sit and get a good juicy post down.

do it Lena. Sarah and John were great together. I have often said I would like to watch a compilation of just the mom/son scenes.

Re: yes
One of my favorite Sarah and John scenes was in Strange Things Happen at the One-Two Point, when John has been up all night researching Dakara and setting up an appointment and cover story for Sarah as an investor. I love that scene so much :)
